Hi Guys,

I had a problem recently, by mistake I opened up an email which had a virus (so called screen saver in it). and I did not have any virus checker install on my pc. It infected TCPIP file and also winservices. I have deleted them and copied newones in but since then what has been happening is it does not let me launch most of my programs and also does not let me install my programs. I have manage to download mcafee antivirus and checked all the hard drive but there are not any viruses.

I have got about 70meg of data which is very important and I can't loose that. So what should I do?

Thanks in advance

Saqi

Well, if you run a virus scan on your computer and there is nothing, you probably cleaned it with the new files...

You may try another AV to be sure or use a Trojan cleaner maybe it will help...

First backup your data ! Use a CDR, a network server or computer or a least another hard drive... --------------------------------

If possible go to the following site and run their FREE A.V. program:
klik about midpage where it says scan without registering - then follow the directions from there. Bare with it when it is downloading the necessarry files to do the scan as this might take a while depending on your connection. It might even seem to have stalled - but usually it is still loading. Run the scan as instructed. It is a good deal and frequently finds viri that was missed by others. Some of these Virus's are difficult to clean without a full fdisk/format, such as the file encrypters. And a few require even more done, like running a debug string to clear the cmos/hdd after booting to a write protected boot disc that was created on a known clean system. Whenever possible, if I think I am dealing with an infected system I will install another hard drive in the system (one that I took out of an old box or purchased at a garage sell for a few bucks). I will then copy the files to it that I want to keep- not always possible depending on the virus. I worked on a system a few weeks ago that had an apparent newer and nastier version of the magistr32 virus. I could not boot at all so I used a 4 gig drive with a fresh install of XP as the master - setting the original to slave. I was able to boot up long enough to recognise what the system had going on, but within 2 minutes I was watching file extensions change on the master. Within another minute or two the master was inoperable. One important thing to know is that some A.V. programs have a setting pertaining to the depth of the file structure and how deep it scans. Mcafee is one of these, and on certain versions at least the default setting does NOT scan all of the code completely. This is kinda funny to watch because if you run the online scan mentioned above - as it expands the cab files to scan them - Mcafee will sometimes kick in warning of an infected file. This on a system that has already been scanned just before doing this by Mcafee. Once again-Mcafee was not set to scan the entire depth of these compressed files- but did after another program decompressed them ( really should turn off any other A.V. program when running trend micro or anyone elses program). Good luck my friend.
