I have tried every which way possible to set this up! It should be simple....
LAN with BEFSVP41 connected to Comcast Cable (set up as static IP)
Windows XP laptop which I want to use for dialling into the Internet remotely.
I have set up the router correctly: local subnet and ANY for remote secure group and remote security gateway. In theory, on my XP laptop, all I should need to do is use the New Connection Wizard to create a VPN connection, et voila! - in your dreams that is!
Has anyone set up a VPN link like this? If so, please could you let me know how you did it. My VPN log shows the handshaking and key exchange and then either "Payload Malformed" or "Check your Encryption and Authentication method settings" Error 800 or error 792 on the Win XP side.

Any assistance would be much appreciated

I am not familiar with XP but on the linksys VPN router you will need to make sure you are using the correct phase 1 and phase 2 encryption. I am not sure if XP will do 3des you may want to set it to DES and then click on the more link at the bottom of the tunnel and verify phase one and phase 2 encryption schemes. Linksys I beleive has a white paper on this senario on their website.

Yes, I have checked out the Linksys white paper on this - and spent about 6 hours with various Linksys tech support people trying to get it to work.

In essence, they eventually stated that both sides have to be configured as static IPs - which meant that every time I wanted to dial in to the Internet and connect to my VPN, I would have to modify my IPSec policies - far too cumbersome

SSH works

I have two BEFVP41 routers set up with a vpn, the routers basically set up the tunnels between themselves, then route any traffic destined for the remote internal LAN IP's through the vpn. One side runs XP and the other Win2K. Only have to add the routes to the routing table if you have another gateway like I did. One side is static and the other dynamic (temporarily I hope, this was a test). Ones on a T1 in a DMZ off a cisco 2600 and the other on RR Cable. Haven't tried using just one and IPSEC with Win2k/XP, but it seems to be solid using one router on each end. Just sharing my info on the BEFVP41's.

Yes, I don't have a problem with the BEFVP41 either - but I am unlikely to want to carry one around with me for every time I need to connect into the VPN from my laptop....!

Which is why I now use SSH !
