I rebuilt a dell desktop and it is working fine and running well OFF the network. However, this machine when connected to our domain runs very slow and takes ages for anybody to login and for things to open etc. However, when logging in locally it runs fine. The machine is on the domain fine and joined to the network, the profiles are fine in terms of size etc, its a clean build really and there was a memory upgrade as well.
Any ideas as to why this is very very slow? the other machines on the network are fine and working fine, please help.

What is running slow? Internet browsing? All applications (local and networked)? Specific apps?

Is it network slowness or general OS/App slowness?

Have you checked Task Manager to see what's consuming the majority of the resources?

Does the domain have any group policies which may be installing required software in the background? (Windows update, AV, etc)?

Checked PC vendor site for latest NIC driver?

Google Slow XP on Domain. Loads of advice out there.

Most people spend their time on the "urgent" rather than on the "important."

DNS issue??? If it's Windows 2003 server that you're connecting to the machine should have a DNS entry of the server IP address. Otherwise, it takes forever to log in and you can lose mappings.

Logging in takes ages with any login, not just the first time. Opening applications takes ages. Connecting to network drives takes ages. Task Manager doesnt show anything taking up huge resources. It is a small network and there azre no group policies I believe, how can I check? NIC Drivers are fine. Any suggestions?

DNS Server Not Defined! Thank you everyone!!

Have you checked the speed setting on the NIC? Auto negotiate, 10Mb 100Mb full duplex etc etc

I used to have a handle on life... but it broke. Cpt. Red Bull

Sorry, this is still an issue but the issue is that the user in question, whenever she logs onto any pc and tries to do any work it is very slow and in Sage for example she runs a backup and gets a windows delayed write failed error message, is unable to open msn messenger, internet takes ages, yet as soon as somebody else logs ontpo that machine it is fine, any ideas on this? many thanks.

delete her profile and recreate. or rename profile and have her relog back in .

Removing both user and machine from the Domain and rejoining the Domain might be worth a try?

I will try that and get back to you, any other suggestions in the meantime wil be good as I am going to do this tomorrow.
