PROBLEM

I have a dual boot Windows 98 SE and Windows XP Pro.After running Adaware , windows XP logs in and then immediately logs out. This behaviour occurs for all the usernames , including Admin id.Iam not able to work on even safe mode.Last Known Good Config also doesnt work.

ACTUAL SOLUTION

Figured out that adaware leaves certain registry key associated with a spyware unchanged
which causes this problem.Fixing the registry will solve this problem.

You can read the thread at lavasoft [ pasted at the end of this comment ],which clearly explains how the problem is caused.

CURRENT PROBLEM

Iam on a dial up and hence am not able to dload the ISO files. However iam able to access windows
98.

So is there a way by which i can make the changes of the windows XP registry from windows 98 itself?

I have tried copying userinit.exe to winupdater.exe. Didnt help.

Also note iahve the win xp cd,but my cdrom drive doesnt boot off it.[Shouldnt matter i think, as
iam able to use win 98 ]

SO I know the solution but dont know how to apply it !!

Could you help me out to fix this problem ??

Thanks.

Unable to Log On To Windows XP After Removing wsaupdater.exe
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

SYMPTOM

After removing wsaupdater.exe from BlazeFind using Ad-aware 6 Build 181 and reference file 01R314 02.06.2004 or 01R320 19.06.2004, the ability to log on to the system may be compromised.

CAUSE

This file edits an area of the registry, and Ad-aware 6 Build 181 is unable to correct this registry change. The registry item changed is

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon

Value: Userinit

Data: %system32%\wsaupdater.exe

%system32% represents the path to the System32 folder. For example, if the path is C:\Windows\System32, then the data would be

C:\Windows\System32\wsaupdater.exe

Instead of wsaupdater.exe, the data should contain userinit.exe,. Using the example above, the data would be

C:\Windows\System32\userinit.exe,

Note the comma following the file path information.

RESOLUTION

Using the recovery console, copy userinit.exe to wsaupdater.exe to allow log on capability to be restored, and correct the registry data manually.

In the following instructions, C:\Windows\System32 shall be used as the System32 location. Change the path accordingly to accommodate for your installation directory. If your system did not come with a Windows XP startup disk or Windows XP CD-ROM, such as if it came with a custom OEM CD for restoring Windows, or the recovery information is located on the hard drive, you can create the disks needed to perform these steps by following the instructions at the Microsoft web page corresponding to the version of Windows XP in use:

I am not sure, but I don't believe you can load a registry hive into the 98 Registry. With a parallel install of XP, or something like BartPE, hive loading is possible, and you can amend the broken registry via that method (see lower down this thread).

Are you sure you followed your original instructions correctly, I only ask because plenty of people have had success with that procedure, and it is a lot easier than what I am writing about?

You may as well stop here if your CD-ROM wont boot from anything at all. Have you checked the Bios for the boot order, see if your CD-ROM is number 2 after any Floppy, and that the hard drive is the last in the order of things.

HOW TO: Install and Use the Recovery Console for Windows XP (Q307654)

An easy to follow recovery console description when unable to start computer due to corrupt registry.

This is a layman's version of Q307545 in simple language.

As an Administrator highlight one of the two following Keys, it will only be available for these Keys.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
HKEY_USERS

These two articles in the RegEdit Help are a good explanation of the process.

To load a hive into the registry
To unload a hive from the registry

You should be able to make use of BartPE (a mini XP self contained on a bootable CD and run from CD).

The same might be possible with a parallel install of XP.

266465 - HOW TO: Perform a Parallel Installation of Windows 2000

You can do the same with XP. Don't install any unnecessary programs just some virus scanners, keep the parallel installation as simple as possible.

Or the paragraph in this article.

If it all gets too much there is always repairing windows by running it over itself. You will lose all your windows updates but your files and programs will be untouched.
