Windows XP Login virus?

Every time I try logging onto windows with this machine, The login goes through, but as soon as it finishes the login process it logs me out. I have tried to login as follows:

Logon to domain as user
logon to domain as administrator
logon to local machine as user
logon to local machine as administrator
login as administrator under safe mode (with and without networking and command prompt)

Does anyone know of a virus that causes this. I have some important data on the machine, and I need to be able to confirm whether or not it is a virus, but I can't run a scan because I can't get in to windows

Have you tried logging into safe mode? Hit F8 when the computer is just starting to boot and select safe mode from the list that appears.

Search the XP forum forum779 - this has come up before and it's not a virus.
