I bought a new computer with Window XP Home on it. I installed a 20 gig hard drive from my old computer which had Windows 2000 installed on it. XP would not read the disk. It Partitioned it as 3 drives. The computers help desk said this is an XP problem. My computer friends at work think its a bios problem. Has any one had this problem?

Which connection did you put this drive on? When you are first booting does the bios see it? Check the master\slave jumper settings and make sure they are what is needed now.

One thing - XP will NOT have partitioned the drive without user intervention.

I am with wolluf on this. There are some steps missing in the original user description of the issue.

I set the XP (C:) drive as master and my old drive (also just C: on the old computer) as slave. When I used 'My Computer' to check how to see if the new drive was listed, it had was listed E:, F: and G:. The B: drive is the CD drive. I could find now way of changing this.
Do I need up grade the old desk to XP so it is reconized correctly.

Thanks,
Terry

'XP would not read the disk. It Partitioned it as 3 drives'
'When I used 'My Computer' to check how to see if the new drive was listed, it had was listed E:, F: and G:.'

What happened between XP not being able to read the drive and drives E:, F: and G: appearing (is CD really B: - not D:)? Do drives E-G contain any data visible to XP?

XP did not list any files on E, F or G. I have about 8 gig of files on the drive. I am sorry the CD drive is D not B.
