Help! This is driving me mad!

We have new Windows XP workstations (SP1) - Two days ago, they ALL became unstable, randomly freezing (mouse still moves).
After much investigation I found that it only hapens when the network cable is connected. I have done a full update and applied all the security patches. I have also checked for viruses.
Could anyone shed any light on this?
