My Motherboard is an ASUS A7V266, Bios was at Rev 1008 I have an AMD 2100XP Processor installed which has been there for a couple of years.
A couple of weeks ago I replaced this processor with an AMD 2600 XP, but the Bios did not detect it as this processor (running in jumperfree mode) it gave me the option of "Manual, 1.25ghz or 1.65ghz" which is the clock speed of the AMD 2100, I tried to increase to 1.65/1.75 but it hung so I put it back to 1.25ghz and it has worked fine.
Yesterday I updated Bios to rev 1011 thinking it would sort the problem but it didn't, it caused it to hang even more sometimes on booting start-up programs or it may be OK for a while then for no reason hang.
So I changed Bios back to Rev 1008 thinking this would bring back to original, but it still hangs.
I think it may have some bearing on not detecting the AMD 2600 Processor properly but unsure how to get round the problem.
Any help would be great.

Your motherboard does not support 333fsb Thoroughbred or Barton core XP2.6+ CPU's only the very first 266fsb variant, which are rare and you will only pick one up now second hand.
Unfortunately for you, only Barton and Thoroughbred "B" cored XP2.6+ 's are now readily available.
If you manage to find one of the original XP2.6's
your motherboard will need to be:
PCB version 1.07 or higher with bios 1011 or later

Much easier just to swop the XP2.6+ for a Thoroughbred core XP2.4+ 266fsb

Thanks paparazi & bcastner for your help.
Didn't know about which core supported which board but a check on Asus support proved very useful.
I have put back my AMD 2100 and will update M/B in the near future.

Thanks a million John.m

Got back to near normal with a few problems reamain.
Have also flashed to A1011 wich is the latest and worked fine. ????????????? Time will tell as machine did hang a couple of times prior to flashing Bios.

The welcome screen and List of accounts has changed to a black screen and one account clicking OK loads fine but have tried to change User Account check box to welcome screen with no avail.
The second problem if I open My Computer or any other box the Left hand Information window has vanished.
The third problem is if I try and open "Add/Remove programs" nothing happens all the other Icons work OK.

Thanks for any help

817164 - When You Log Off, Windows XP Displays the Logon Dialog Box on a Black Screen Instead of on the Welcome Screen

Try showing Common Tasks in Folder Options/ View.
Specifies that hyperlinks to common folder tasks and other places on your computer are displayed in folders. These links appear in the left pane of the folder window.

See if these help with Add/Remove?

Run the System File Checker program from the Run Box by typing.....Sfc /Scannow in it and have your XP CD handy.

Seem to have found part of the problem for hanging, I put 2 other Hard drives in, that I had stopped using and it still Hung so after a bit of trial and error I found that one of my DDR 256 memory cards may have caused the problem, as when I removed the first one, no change but when I took out the second one it stopped hanging.
So, the old set of Hard drives work fine know, BUT, the new 200gig Hard drive has lost some functions.
i.e Add/Remove Programs Icon has disappeared also every time I use IE6 Zone Labs want to know if I want to access everything when I already told it a dozen times, also a few other items not working properly.
Thinks i may have to zap drive and start again.
