Hello guru's

I have a client that wants to purchase 2 gateway pc's. They want Win 98 on them not XP which is what the come with. The sales person told her that if she has a Win 98 CD she can downgrade them from windows XP to 98. I've never heard of this. The only thing I can think of is that they originally had 98 installed and they upgraded those PC's to XP, and that is why they are telling her i can downgrade them. Does anyone know if this is true. Because unless someone tells me other wise, I don't think it will happen. I'll just wipe the HD and start fresh.

Thanks Ya'll

You're client will have to purchase the systems with Win XP and then wipe the HD and reinstall Win98. One thing to keep in mind, alot of the new systems being put out are being put out with hardware that doesn't have lesser OS support...be sure to research the driver availability prior to wiping the systems....good luck...

Thats what I'm going to do. The salesman told me that XP is designed so it can emulate 98, nt 4 or w2k. He also said it can be downgraded only if you buy XP Profesional for more money.

XP is garbage as far as I'm concerned. It has many many problems and when you get a PC with it or install it you have to update patches, you have to download hot fixs just to get it working right. AND if you don't look at technet once a week to see the latest hot fix your box will be vulnerable. XP looks like candy. I don't need an OS that looks like candy I need a computer that functions correctly for work. Not surfing the net and sending pictures to friends and downloading MP3s.

The clients don't want to pay for the support they will constantly need if they have XP machines. And even tho they are a server based network. XP Home can only handle 5 peer networked computers. Even tho I never peer network more then 5 computers, if a person has more then 5 XP boxes in there house they are screwed and that is very very lame.

Down with XP [noevil]
Thanks

Running XP pro on many machines and works fine. As long as you have the resources to accomodate it is very stable.

Remember when people belly ached about going from 3.11 to 95? No? well they did; I am sure there are still those running 3.11 and good for you but obviously they have limited functionality. I would hate it not to be able to have my digital camera because my OS doesn't support it.
Technology is constantly changing and as an IT manager you should be viewing technet regularly anyway.

As a computer user they can let it run without the patches, but that same held true for older software including Windows 95 and especially Internet Explorer which always has patches being released. Can you run it without them? Of course you can, and you may never be affected by a security vulnerability.

Keep in mind just as 95 can no longer run certain software like IE 6, this will one day happen with 98.
I know of users who have bought software that would not support 95 and the just thought it would.

"Out with the old in with the new."

Install XP use classic view and all is well.

Respectfully,
Dan

I have decided to run xp with classic view. I will get calls like crazy from these people just because the screen looks diffrent. It's easy to say, but when you have these people who don't know ANYTHING about pc's they don't want it upgraded. we all know XP is bad right now and Bill Gates couldn't tell me diffrent. When I booted up these boxes 18 updates I had to download. I use 2k pro and I never have a problem. I will never switch to xp. They will have another os out by the time I switch. I liked the auto update feature on xp and that is the only reason I am keeping XP on them. All xp has is more .net crap and microsoft bullshit to try to take over the world. I don't need it in my boxes.
