will refresh rate cause the monitor to shut off?
Dell pc
p4
256mb ram
geforce4 420 pci 64mb

Yes, if you have it set to a value that the monitor cannot handle. Restart in safe mode and reset the refresh rate to auto or optimal, whatever is supported on your system. Help us to help you, please post back and tell us if this helped.

i ran sandra and it recommended to change from 60 to 75. this is my sons pc and the monitor will shut off at random intervals but the monitor light will stay on. he has been on the phone with dell support for hours to no avail. i also ran pc pitstop and all was good, their only recomendation was more ram. also ran spybot a lot of spyware more than i have ever seen. the screen that came up said it is shutting down wimdows. driver irql etc.

well its not refresh rate, still shutting down windows and monitor goes blank. have repaired disk with help from Dell support.now get no messages, just goes blank.

You could have a hardware problem, either the monitor or video card, try it with another monitor and see what happens Help us to help you, please post back and tell us if this helped.

I know someone who had problems with screen suddenly going blank - turns out there was a lot of dust inside. Used air blower and vacuum cleaner and PC has been working fine since.

could it be a loose cable, or power saving settings in windows ?

have already checked all of the above mentioned. since this is a fairly new system and still under warranty, we are going to let the dell support staff handle it. personally i think it is either hard drive or video card. since dell support had my son to repair the hard drive, the monitor shuts off, light stays on, and now no message just a black screen. thanks for your replys.
