my registry got corrupted when we had a power-outage
i reinstalled windowsXP and it boots up fine for a few
boots, but it corrupted again.

Windows XP could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM.

any ideas?

When you did the reinstall did you do a full format of the drive?

Some things to look at here. But you might as well try the easy options first. Try using System Restore to get back to before that error.

Go into Safe Mode and see if selecting "last known good configuration" helps you.

Try using the System File Checker program from the Run Box (sfc /scannow).

If no luck with above you could try repairing windows itself by running it over itself. You will lose all your windows updates but your files will be untouched.

REPAIR WINDOWS

Boot from XP CD
(Windows will now load some temporary files)

Options after booting

*To Set Up Windows XP now press ENTER

*To Repair a Windows XP installation using Recovery Console, press R

*To Quit Setup without installing Windows XP, press F3

Press ENTER for first option (don't select Recovery Console)
(Accept Eula agreement)

Follow onscreen instructions to repair windows installation

How to Perform an In-Place Upgrade (Reinstallation) of Windows XP (Q315341)

1. Lets keep this easy.... he stated that he reinstalled XP, so im sure he knows how to do that..
2. suggest 1. make a Boot Disk...i usually give my customers a WinME(boot disk).
3. i then make sure there is a good copy of missing file on the floppy.... if it failes to boot, boot to floppy then copy the missing files to the proper place.
4. then you can REBOOT... Frank Smith

thanks for all the advice but i need to know the reasons for this error, cause i fixed the problem and it keeps comming back.?

These people too are asking why. The reason varies from machine to machine and is hard to pin down.

One person said he fixed it by removing this windows update.
"Resuming From
Standby Update This update addresses the "Devices May Not
Power Up Properly When Resuming From Standby (Q311542)"

One person said it was his Faulty memory.

Another person said, "Others have had the same problem, including myself. I had to do a re-install
and delete the cause of the problem, the VIA miniport drivers."

In your case, the power outage you mention has probably done some internal damage. It wouldn't be a bad idea to download the memory testing program from and check your memory.

i used partition magic pro 7.0....i deleted the partition
and did a clean install..when i said i fixed it, i replaced the system file from the c:\windows\repair. if i was not clear i am sorry.

I know this sounds wierd but try this just for kicks. Plug your computer into a different outlet and let us know if it still happens. Also are you using a surge protector? If so do not plug into it.

im pretty sure it's your ntlldr file. if u reinstalled and remormated your hard drive then its something hardware. but if u didn't and booted the OS from the previous Os. then its your ntldr file. if you'd like i can send u a copy of this file. after it should work fine. Thanks, PAUL

Buffbadddude,

According to several people on these boards, you're not supposed to used third party software to partition, you should allow WinXP setup to setup the partitions.
