Hi,

I got this one XP client that is trying to access a VPN, the problem that am having is that the XP client is broadcasting on Port 445, and the windows server is listening on port 139. On the firewall logs i can see a connection attempt being made to the sever that the client is trying to map a drive to, but it is on the wrong port.....

Is there anyway that i can force the XP client to broadcast on port 139 nbsession..

Ad get rid of the client if it was up to me, its the IT directors laptop, so i aint really got a choice.

Thanks in advance..

Wow, old network there huh?

Hey buddy, 445 has been in use to service SMB over TCP since Windows 2000 came out. Bog only knows what you are using for file servers - or is this an old 9x peer-to-peer file sharing network?

Lucky for you there is an easy answer. To make XP play well with last century's MS networks:

[ul][li]Open Network Connections
[li]Right-click and select Properties for the connection you want to devolve
[li]Select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and click on the Properties button on the General tab
[li]Now, on Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties, on the General tab, click on the Advanced button
[li]On Advanced TCP/IP Settings, select the WINS tab, and then change the NetBIOS Setting to Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP
[li]Bow your way out by OK, OK, OKing
[li]Close the Network Connections window[/ul]
I don't think you'll need to reboot that laptop then, but it couldn't hoit!

You'll have the NBT crutch as well as direct hosting SMB capabilities on the laptop machine. The way it works is XP will try both ports 139 and 445. If 445 answers, it abandons NBT like a dolphin shedding a bulky wetsuit. If 445 fails and 139 works, XP continues to work with the extra NBT layer.

If the laptop's NetBIOS Setting was at Default you have a bigger problem. Your DHCP server is telling XP to use direct hosting instead of NBT, even though your poor network isn't capable of it.

See for one description and for additional info.

Hey trust me, this abuse is worth it if you solve el Jefe's problem, right?

Now if I can only get my brother to abandon NetBEUI on his home network so all of his connectivity troubles will go away!

Thanks for that, your help is really appreciated..

and to top it up, the response time on some of these threads is amazing...

You are appreciated.

Thanka again
