Hi,

I have a workgroup of 10 computers.

7 windows98 computers, 2 windows2k professional computers, and 1 windowsXP computer.

They all have tcp/ip and netbios installed(including the xp computer). However the xp computer cant see one of the win2k computers and that win2k computer cant see the xp computer. These 2 computers can ping each others ipaddress but not their names.

Another interesting thing is that any other computer on the network can ping the problematic win2k computers ipaddress but will get a "unknown host" error message when pinging the win2k computer name. And the other win2k computer is doing fine on the network. Can anyone troubleshoot this problem?

Thanks for any help.

Hi

Have you checked that the they all in the same workgroup and also it might be an idea to turn off the ICF (Internet Connect Firewall) just for testing purposes

Hope this helps

Hi PaulJ,

I disabled any firewall already, and regarding being in the same workgroup, remember they can see everyone else, so they must be in the same workgroup (but I checked anyways).

Thanks for the reply.

The xp computer is pent4 and the win2k computer is
pent-500bak

This should be obvious, but...

Make sure neither of the computers is running a firewall program (such as Norton Internet Security or Zone Alarm). If they are, turn them off temporarily so as to prevent interference.

Also make sure you've done all the available "critical" and "recommended" updates from on both computers.

Enable the guest account on both machines so it allows it to do a handshake. If not create another user account on each machine but with the same password.
