Ive been using Windows XP 32 bit edition for a while now but was wondering something about 64 bit. I originally bought the 32 bit because at the time I was hearing a lot of issues with drivers for the 64 bit edition of xp.

My question is for anyone who is using the 64 bit edition or has worked on computers with it. Do you know if they have worked out all the driver issues?

I suppose the answer depends on what hardware you are running. Things are improving all the time, and 64-Bit XP has been around for quite a while.

You might find some information out by running Belarc Advisor to get a full inventory of your hardware, then going to the various manufacturers to see if they have 64-Bit drivers.

Belarc Advisor:

Windows XP Professional x64 Edition and x64-based versions of Windows Server 2003 operating systems do not support 32-bit device drivers. Applications that depend on 32-bit device drivers will not function correctly and might cause an error during an installation or operation. Most 32-bit antivirus programs are affected and should not be installed on computers that are running these operating systems.

If an application attempts to install a 32-bit driver, the installation will fail, and the application will have the opportunity to handle the error. If an application registers a driver for automatic startup, meaning the driver should be installed when the system starts, the operating system will determine that the driver is an unsupported 32-bit driver, not install it, and continue installing the other drivers. The event log will record details of the failure, including the name of the unsupported driver and its location. If this occurs, contact the driver vendor for a software update that is compatible with Windows XP Professional x64 Edition and the x64-based versions of Windows Server 2003 operating systems.

The workstations (server mainboards) that I've installed XP 64bit on, there where no issues with drivers...

on one machine (home environment) I had installed Vista 64bit and had a problem with finding a driver, found one for XP 64bit and thought what the heck, I'll try it, and it installed with out any hassle... may have the same good luck, when you reverse it (Vista driver onto XP)...

Ill probably give it a try this summer soon as I get the money for it. As for the hardware, I know what hardware I have as I built this computer lol. So that will not be a problem.

Ill try both your suggestions, first seeing if the hardware I have has 64 bit drivers which I figure most should since they are practically new, and also if they dont to reverse engineer some drivers lol.

Ive done that before with Windows 2000 pro and xp lol.
