A user on the network, was in e-mail when she clicked on what appeared to be a returned e-mail. She got the blue screen with a message she never saw before, but she didn't write it down or commit it to memory!  She pressed keys and alternated between blue and black screens.  She tried shutting down, but the system hung, so she left and went home for the week-end without powering down!  She returned to the office on Monday morning to discover her system won't reboot and of course after several tries, she calls ME!  When windows attempts to start, the splash screen comes up scrambled!  All the words are legible, just broken up on various parts of the screen! If I hit ESC to see what's going on, it says unknown error (twice) then it either hangs or comes up with a red garbled screen!  Every third time I attempt to start windows, I get the following error:  While Initiating IOS Windows protection error. You need to restart your computer or a get a registry error!  The splash screen is always jumbled!  I was successful with opening in safe mode once, to the point where the wallpaper loaded and then it hung.  I have never seen anything like this, and the NORTON emergency disk is not correcting whatever it is!  Any suggestions?

Well if its an older model I might say the drive might have been damaged physically, or something more than what she told you has happened. but if its that bad recovering data may be very hard(or expensive if you take it to the data recovery group) can you least see anything in dos mode (press F8 about the same time Win98 splash comes up or whenever and chose Comamnd prompt only) like file listing and what not, does Safe mode work?, try a scandisk from dos mode? What does you partition information look like, etc <p>Karl<br><a href=mailto:kb244@kb244.8m.com>kb244@kb244.8m.com</a><br><a href= </a><br>Experienced in , or have messed with : VC++, Borland C++ Builder, VJ++6(starting),VB-Dos, VB1 thru VB6, Delphi 3 pro, Borland C++ 3(DOS), Borland C++ 4.5, HTML, ASP(somewhat), QBasic(least i didnt start with COBOL)

Sorry, I did do a scandisk and it came back fine.&nbsp;&nbsp; The one thing I did get was FAT 32 error something about the bit!&nbsp;&nbsp;Everytime I tried to correct it, the system hung!&nbsp;&nbsp; This is a older Compaq Deskpro 2000, which had not experienced any problems up to this point!&nbsp;&nbsp; The weird thing about the accessing the command prompt is that at times, the windows directory does not exist then if I reboot a couple of times, I can access it, but the some subdirectories have that *&%#%$@#%$ look to them!!&nbsp;&nbsp; This is why I thought it might be a virus!&nbsp;&nbsp;By the way, it's Win95 not 98, if that makes a difference.&nbsp;&nbsp;I think that covers everything this time!&nbsp;&nbsp; Thanks for any assistance!

More than likely a partition error, messed up your File Allocation table(which would show you those garbled file references) <p>Karl<br><a href=mailto:kb244@kb244.8m.com>kb244@kb244.8m.com</a><br><a href= </a><br>Experienced in , or have messed with : VC++, Borland C++ Builder, VJ++6(starting),VB-Dos, VB1 thru VB6, Delphi 3 pro, Borland C++ 3(DOS), Borland C++ 4.5, HTML, ASP(somewhat), QBasic(least i didnt start with COBOL)
