Windows Updates breaking TS access to servers?

Greetings -

Has anyone else had issues with TS (admin, not app) access not being available after installing some of the recent Windows Updates?

I've seen this on a handful of servers lately, and I can't seem to establish a pattern or determine the cause. After the updates are installed and the server reboots, I can no longer access the server via TS/RDP. All services start, and the server is otherwise perfectly functional. Rebooting the servers, restarting the TS service, etc, does not resolve the problem.

In almost every instance, some servers in the same environment don't have the problem, while others do. There seems to be no correlation between server roles, either. Sometimes it's a DC, sometimes it's an app server, etc.

Any recommendations are greatly appreciated.

Hi Pat, I submitted the exact same problem about a week ago, I have been having intermittent problems with RDP on servers after reboots (it requires another reboot to getting going again). No pattern in particular, all servers are running fine (TS is listening, no service errors) These were brand new installs of servers with all the latest patches applied. It doesn't matter what server type.. had this problem on both HP/Compaq and Sun AMD servers (running Win2K3 Enterprise).

I found this article on MS KB site, although I haven't run into these scenarios specifically, it might need further investigation (usually users would contact me immediately after reboot)

Don't know if this helps.

Regards

Terry

Once the problem hits one of my servers, rebooting doesn't fix it. Like you said, services are running fine, including TS service.

From what the KB says, I'm not experiencing those problems. I don't get a session and then have it become unresponsive, nor do I have any of the other issues mentioned.

I'm still looking. Thanks for the info.

Have you both checked to ensure that there are no Windows Firewall (or other firewall) issues here?

One way of basically testing whether TS on the server is listening is by using the PortQry.exe to see whether the 3389 port on the server is actually listening or not. PortQry can be downloaded here:

The required syntax will be:

portqry -n servername -e 3389

--------------------------------------
"Insert funny comment in here!"
--------------------------------------

Have you narrowed down which update seems to cause the issue can you install them one at a time and see if it happens on a particular patch next time.

When you are the IT director, it's your job to make sure the IT works. If it does work they know already and if it doesn't, they don't want to hear your pathetic excuses.

Okay - good call on portqry. On all of the servers that have the problem, none show as listening on 3389. However, the plot thickens. All have the service running, and all have 3389 as the port defined in the registry. None have any firewall installed, and access is attempted from the same subnet (no routing issues here).

porkchopexpress - nope, haven't figured out which one yet. The problem is all of the servers have all of the updates installed, yet only some exhibit the problem.

Are they Dell servers by chance?

I was having lunch with an old collegue and he let me know that there are some needed firmware updates that Dell just released for some of their servers because Windows Updates had problems with the installed Perc drivers.

I hope you find this post helpful.

Mark

They are, but I'm not aware of them being out of date on firmware or drivers. I'll take a stab and check. Thanks for the heads up.

Guys also realize that this problem is not only Dell specific but it has happened to me with my Compaq and Sun boxes (and they are running the latest drivers)

Funny you mention the 1600 line. I have some 1650s. Some have the problem, and some don't. Checking now.

Interestingly, firmware and related drivers did not fix the problem. While it cleared up (on its own) on two servers (at different clients), I still have 2 more (at 2 other clients) that are still having the same problem. Nothing in the event logs; portquery shows the servers are NOT listening on those ports, yet the service is started, the registry shows the correct port, no software firewall, and it's enabled on the REMOTE tab.

Hmm we use all Dell servers and are up-to-date on MS patches on most of them but I've not seen this issue. I noticed this issue on Experts Exchange though not sure if forcing the local policy would fix it for you to. If it does maybe one of the updates changes the default behaviour of "not configured" but seems odd.

Folks I have noticed this pattern as soon as we install SQL Server 2005 (and its related components) on a brand new server. Does this apply to your situation also?

Nope. No SQL 2005. MSDE is likely running on all of the ones in question (Backup Exec)
