I just updated to internet exporer 5.5 and tried to do a windows update and get a blank screen - what is going on? Why - I never had this before......

Got any more info? You say a blank screen - is an error message displayed? how do you get out of it? Andy. My suggestions are what I would try myself. If incorrect, I welcome corrections to my rather limited knowledge. Andy.

hey - it is just a blank screen - with the message at the bottom of the screen saying done - when it first started happening - I think there was a message saying error at the bottom -

In Internet Explorer, go to Help>Online Support, choose the Microsoft Knowledge Base, then check the box that says specify an article ID number, then paste the article numbers below beginning with Q into the search box.

If it is just a matter of "security settings", then try resetting the Web Settings of the browser...

Tools->Internet Options->Programs Tab
Click Reset Web Settings
Restart Internet Explorer

- you can alter the security settings manually on the security tab and on the advanced tab

I know it says 5.0, but give it a shot:

WINUP-Blank Page Displayed If Using Internet Explorer 5.0

------------------------------------------------------------
The information in this article applies to:

Microsoft Windows Update, used with:
Microsoft Internet Explorer version 5 for Windows 95

------------------------------------------------------------

SYMPTOMS
When you attempt to access the Windows Update Web site using Internet Explorer 5.0, you may see a blank page, but receive no error messages.

CAUSE
The Visual Basic Scripting Support (VBScript) component failed to install properly on Internet Explorer 5.0 or became corrupted after the installation.

RESOLUTION
To reinstall the Internet Explorer 5.0 VBScript Support:

Click Start, point to Settings and then click Control Panel.

Double-click the Add/Remove icon.

Click the Install/Uninstall tab, select Microsoft Internet Explorer 5 and Internet Tools.

Click Add/Remove.

Click "Add a component" and then click OK.

Once the Internet Explorer 5 setup program has initialized, scroll down to the "Web Authoring Components" section and select the "Visual Basic Scripting Support" check box.

Click Next. You may receive a prompt warning you that the most recent version of the item selected is already installed. If this occurs, click "Reinstall all components" and then click OK.

When the download and installation of the VBScript Support component has finished, click Finish.

This should automatically restart your computer. If it does not, restart your computer prior to connecting to the Windows Update Web site.

Go to the Windows Update Web site at:

If you are still unable to access the Windows Update site, you may submit an incident to Windows Update Support by following these steps:
Go to
Click "Frequently Asked Questions".

Select Windows Update from the pull-down menu, and then click Go.

Click "General Questions about Windows Update".

Scroll down and click "If the information listed in this FAQ did not address your issue..., you may submit a support request".

This will take you to the Windows Update Site Support Request form and instructions for submitting your request.
