Windows Update will not install

I am running Windows XP Home Edition and want to install the latest critical updates. 823980 in particular to avoid the Blaster Worm. There are 7 updates that are available for my computer and when I go to install them it comes up with the following: "dahotfix.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close" and continues on and doesn't install any of the updates.

When I go to install update #823980 it just won't install period. No reason.

I downloaded the Symantec Blaster Worm Tool and ran it according to instructions but it said there wasn't a worm. Any other ideas??

Same thing happened. When I installed all the updates at one time I get the dahotfix error. Just installing 823980 it won't install at all

What did I do wrong? Any ideas

Have a look at the "Dahotfix" log in C/Windows and see what it says.

Also have a look at the Setupapi.log (same location) for any useful information.

This is a real rough guess only but another thing to check might be Driver Signing Properties.

Right Click the My Computer icon, Properties/ Hardware/ Driver Signing/ and try removing any option to block installation (if you have it set).

It might be a good idea to apply the MDAC 2.7 RTM refresh. This would have been an update from late January that you should have received through Automatic Updates. It certainly is not going to hurt:

Click the "Download" button, and when the box appears select 'Open' to install immediately.
