windows update problems

Just re-installed win98SE on an old P233 Micron, and went to run the Windows Update. It will not run. The same machine will also not run McAfee Antivirus online. It comes up and says it must verify subscription, goes to McAffee, says subscription verified, but will not run. Cannot download the performance optimizer portion of McAfee Clinic.

I'm sure both are related.
Another Win98SE machine on the same dialup connection runs all apps just fine.

I can surf the net, run online banking, etc with no problem. No other applications have been installed. The windows update problem existed before loading the McAfee clinic.

I know I'm not the only one to have this happen - but what is the fix, and the cause???

Have you got a firewall installed? if you have you may need to reduce the security to be able to do what you want.
Have you got anti-virus software installed? Is it upto date?
If not you will need to run a scanner from DOS before you install any anti virus software.

No, there is no firewall.A simple dialup connection through sprint with an internal Rockwell chip 56K modem.(A-Open)
As for the antivirus, we installed Win98, logged onto the internet and attempted to run the Windows Update. We could not, so we downloaded McAfee AntiVirus Online portion of the McAfee Clinic and attempted to run it. We got the verification problem.

This machine was previously running with win95 and had a registry error. It is being set up to use as a standby machine in case the main system has problems (data will be transferred by CDRW from the main system on a regular basis) and will be kept offsite. Attempt attotal redundancy.

Found the problem. You guys will likely get a good laugh out of this one - but keep it in mind if it ever happens to you. The date was set to the wrong year - I think it was 3053. No wonder I could not get any updates ............

Just a bit ahead of your time then. I wonder what computers will be like then. We will probably be born with a built in interface, if we don't destroy ourselves or the world first.
