Hello. Having probs installing the latest KB905915 fix for Win 2000 Pro. I get a message "preparing to install", but that's it. Nothing happens. Nothing shows on the progress bar,and when I cancel the install (after 30 minutes or so - it should only take 10 minutes), I get a message that there is something wrong with my Windows installation. My system is a stand-alone PC running Windows 2000 Professional & updated to SP4. I have NO anti-virus or Firewall (I'm on dialup). I am a home user and the PC is not part of a network. I just did an online McAfee virus check - the PC is clean.

The W2000 installation on this PC is very "vanilla" - just the basic Word and Excel software + IE6 installed. System very stable and all previous WinUpdate fixes have installed seamlessly. But not this one. Have Google searched over the last few days, and see other folk have had similar probs with KB905915 (usually running XP) but cannot find a definitive answer/fix/work around, and I cannot find a mention of W2000 having the prob. I've tried uninstalling a couple of previous Hotfixes and then installing KB905915 but no luck - KB905915 won't install. Have tried 6 + times now...

I'm posting here because it seems this fix is very much a "critical" one, and I do want to get it installed, but I'm stumped.

Any ideas?

TX.

Chris

You could try downloading the standalone installer for the patch here.

By the way, dialup doesn't mean you don't need security for your machine. I've seen some really major infections on dialup machines in the past. ZoneAlarm firewall and AVG anti virus are both free for home use and do the job nicely..

Thanks Tazuk! :thumbs up:. The standalone installer worked first time. No idea what the problem was but the fix is installed and listed in add/remove so everything's fine. :)

Regarding the firewall/antivir situation, well I got into a real pickle about 24 months ago using Norton A/V on my PC and laptop - system slowdowns, software install probs, system hanging, blocked software installs etc, so I was forced to uninstall Norton from both machines. Have never found a need for it since. But i am a VERY conservative net user - mainly just email and I check the same dozen news sites every day. I don't surf much. Also, with dialup, i like the idea that the PC is disconnected from the web when not in use. In my case a firewall would be pretty much redundant.

Many thanks again for the installer tip.

chris.
