I ran windows update and installed the upgrades (not SP2) and now the icon is in the tray. Can't click or right click on it and the tooltip says "Downloading updates: 0%". Restarting computer does not make it disappear.

How do I get it off my tray?

It is likely due to SP2 if you do not have it applied. I would leave it alone, it will clear by itself.

It's been left alone for a week, through reboots. nothing so far. I am a little hesitant to go to SP2 right now.

In that case you should disable automatic updates. Right Click on My Computer and select properties. Click on the Automatic Updates tab and select the "Turn off Automatic Updates" option. Now reboot your machine and you should find that it is gone.

Just make sure that you vist regularly for your updates.
