While runing Windows Update on all of my workstations, I've discovered some weird behavior with certain users and my office's ISA server. Here's the deal:
Certain users in my company receive an error message when Windows Update scans for updates (a generic "has encountered a problem" error). When I tried to correct this by installing the Firewall client, I found that I could not browse to my ISA server. The message I receive says that <server namne> is not accessable and did not receive the request. However, if I open a command prompt, I can ping and Tracert to the server.
The only things these users have in common is that they:
1. are using Windows 98 (see below)
2. were not originally granted Internet access. We created a NoWebAccess group and then used SurfControl to block them. I've removed them from that group but still have trouble.
If I change the connection in Internet properties to use the ISA server at my company's other location, Windows Update runs perfectly.
If I log on to one of the problem 98 machines as any user who does not have this problem, everything works. I can install Firewall and run Update. If I install the Firewall client and then logon as a problem user, the Windows Update problem comes back.
If I logon to a Windows 2000 or XP machine as a user who does have this problem, I can install Firewall and run Update. These users only have the problem when they are using a 98 machine.
So basically, certain users cannot browse to my location's ISA server when they are working on a Windows 98 machine.
Hope I explained it well enough.
