windows starts only in safe mode

I recently installed direct x 9.0 a on my pc which has win98 SE. after the installation, i can only start the pc in safe mode and if i try it in the normal mode it freezes up. The registry restoration didn't work either.
Could u please suggest a solution?

Try booting safe mode, run DXDIAG.exe to look at the DirectX diagnostics and see if it says anything is wrong.
Obviously it will be running in standard VGA mode so the low colour depth and resolution is to be expected.

Also try running SFC.EXE (this is the system file checker which will see if there is a problem with any of the key files).

Get back to me with the results of anything.
