As the administrator on my wifes laptop, I set the Symantec LiveUpdate service to "Automatic", but next time the machine boots it resets itself to "Manual".

The result is every few days, I have to log in as the administrator to update the virus definitions.

Does anyone know how I can force it to keep the "Automatic" setting?

The machine is a HP 510, running XP Home with all the latest patches.

Thanks

Steve

What does the Registry tell you about the start value for your service?

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\ THE SERVICE NAME @ Start

For example, 00000002=Automatic, 00000003=Manual, 00000004=Disabled

This is a Signature and not part of the answer, it appears on every reply.

This is an Analogy so don't take it personally as some have.

Why change the engine if all you need is to change the spark plugs.

The start value in the registry is 00000003 (Manual)

I changed it in the registry to 00000002, looked in services and it was Automatic and stopped. Rebooted and checked again and it is automatic and started.

Looks like job done [thumbsup2]. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.
