Instructions from Norton on how to get NIS 2005 to install said to download Windows Script 5.6 and install it. What is it, why is it needed when Norton 2004 was running without it, and is it safe to install? Does it introduce new vulnerabilities? Is it even for Windows 98 se? I've looked at Microsoft's site and they basically say it will 'enhance one's internet experience' which always makes me suspicious. Usually such programs take away user control.

The NIS 2005 is running on a more improved engine than 2004 is, so in order for it to install and operate properly, it may need additional components that your system may not have. Basically the Windows Script just handles all the scripting controls that NIS 2005 might have in it(as well as any other program that has improved scripting code such as websites running improved Javascripts). It has improved security settings as well as better handling against arguements. I would say go for the download...the NIS 2005 is a pretty decent program so I think it would be worth it.

Thanks for the reply. I wonder if you by chance work for Symantec since you're so upbeat about NIS 2005. I've spent the better part of a month, have gone through their 8-10 page set of instructions for uninstalling anything that might conflict and reinstalling NIS 2005 and still can't get it to install. From these forums it's obvious that other people are having problems too, but I haven't seen any replies to their or my appeals for help. Can you offer any help?
