Windows random freezing

I posted this message in the email section thinking it was isolated to email, but it seems to be global. For some reason Windows keeps freezing at random times, during backup or in outlook, or whenever. Does anyone know why this may be happening? Bad memory perhaps?

Certainly that's a symptom of bad hardware - RAM's a good place to start - but could be any component.
