When I start up my PC, I get the dreaded bluescreen with :-

WINDOWS PROTECTION ERROR. YOU NEED TO RESTART YOUR PC

SYSTEM HALTED !

I have tried system restore..NO GOOD
It starts in safe mode, but without recognising my CD writer, so I can't back up critical stuff and re-install

PLEASE HELP> URGENTLY !!!

No, It has been running perfectly well for a few weeks then BOOM! It isn't an upgrade either. It's the full product.

If your computer is an AMD 300 and above proessor (not intel), then you need a patch from MS. The patch can be obtained thru the link in AMD site also. This is OS patch.
Hope this helps you :-) ramani :-9

Have you tried starting up your computer with an ME startup disk - must be ME startup disk - not Win98. Goto c:\windows\command. Type in scanreg /fix. This will attempt to rebuild registry. May help you get the beast going.

No. It's a pentium III 500mhz with 384mb ram. I did try a WinME startup disk, and msconfig selective startup, but it locked on the blue screen of death every time. In the end I used a file splitter to back up my data to floppy and re-installed.

thanks guys
