Windows policy

Hey there,
I just wanna know how do i make that windows policy work?
I made a policy file using poledit. I made user restrictions, i mean i specified what a user is allowd to do and not. I did everything i needed to do but i didn't manage to make that policy work. Dunno where to put it... what to do with it. Little help please

C:\WINDOWS\INF directory called Common.adm...this File should be in the INF directory

To use poledit.exe (System Policy Editor) correctly.......you need to make sure that these three files are in the C:\WINDOWS\INF folder (not a subfolder beneath it)....
1. Poledit.inf
2. Windows.adm
3. Common.adm

If after that, you are still having trouble.....try installing Group Policies(Grouppol.dll),(you'll probably need this if you have User Profiles enabled) which you may be prompted for from the Win98 CD....to do this....
Go to Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs>Windows Setup Tab>System Tools and select the checkbox for "Group Policies"....click OK and then OK again..
The Grouppol.dll file should be in your C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM Directory,..and Grouppol.inf in the C:\WINDOWS\INF directory


This next excerpt is taken right from the poledit.txt file on Win98 CD-ROM :
To install this tool on your local hard disk,
or to install support for group policies,
use the Add/Remove Programs option in Control Panel, select the Windows Setup tab, click the Have Disk button, and install from the TOOLS\RESKIT\NETADMIN\POLEDIT directory located on the install media.

Also find these files Poledit.hlp and Win98rk.hlp on the Win98 CD in D:\tools\reskit\help....where < D: > is your CD drive..

Hi,

Login with the user name on which you want policy to work. Then open the registry thru poledit and make the necessary changes in the Local User and save. This will make changes to that particular user only.

Thanks alot for your help. Now i understood how things work but still got a lil` problem. I would like to use this policy on a single computer, i mean i want to add 2 users e.g. admin and user1 and to apply the policy for the user1. I know that this is possible using a pdc (i configured a samba too, didn't finish yet with it) but i need to know if that policy can be applied like i just said above (admin -> user)without any remote administration and so on. I just want to make some restrictions on a few PC's and advance further on with a pdc and so on. I thought it'll be easier for now to configure 2 users (admin which would be me, of course and a user1 to whom the policy is applied to by the admin) can i do that?

I guess you would make 2 separate users(Admin and User1) and only give the admin. rights to yourself......policies will be enforced at logon for user1...

acidbrain - are you talking about a domain environment (pdc - Primary Domain Controller)? If so, are you concerned with setting up policies on the NT/2k/2k3 server which apply to win98 machines?
