We are using NT 4 Server (SP 6a) to host several publicly-available websites for our organization. Inside our main site, we have a Vitrual Directory for an emplyee-only Intranet. While the public site allows anonymous access, the Intranet uses "Windows NT Challenge/Response" authentication to allow access from the Internet. The web server is a member of our NT 4 domain, so it uses domain accounts to authenticate users (and automatically allows them in if they're logged into the LAN).
Access from the Internet has worked fine until our users started getting XP Home on their home computers. Now they are unable to acces the Intranet from home. I have had them set our site in their "Trusted Sites" category in IE, as well as set that category to prompt for user name and password. None of that has helped, and they are still unable to access the Intranet.
I had a similar problem after I installed IE 6 on my home computer (Win 2k Pro), but following the above steps corrected it. I suspect the problem is related to XP's inability to join a domain, and this problem will grow as more of our users get new computers at home.
Has anyone run into this problem, and can offer a solution? Thanks very much!
