I was wondering if this is a necessary service that needs to be run. I am not an expert or anything on nt but it looks like all it does is help find things on the network. Does wins do the same thing or am i totally wrong on this?

Thanks

The Computer Browser service populates the Network Neighbourhood list in Windows Explorer, and allows you to "see" the other computers in the network.

Why would you want to stop it from running? [auto] MCSE NT4/W2K

Right now i am using the brownmon utility and it shows that there is the master browser and 56 servers underneath it. Does this mean the those 56 computers are acting like the backup browser servers and if so, do i need those computers to all be there. I really don't know anything about this subject.

I think you must edit registry on your w/s:
______

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Browser\Parameters]
"IsDomainMaster"="No"
"MaintainServerList"="No"

So none of the workstations need it. We have some 98 clients on the network. Is it the same registry key or is there a different one. So i can turn this service off on all the computers accept the servers. I tried this on my win2k workstation and my computer still shows up as one of the servers using browmon.
