I have a Windows 2003 Server with Windows Media Services trying to stream a
few newly encoded (with Windows Media Encoder 9) videos. The server sits
behind a little Netgear firewall and I have opened all the appropriate ports
(tcp/udp1755, tcp554,udp5004-5005). On the server itself, MMS and RTSP are
enabled.
When a WMP 10 client (I have tried 3 computers) tries to connect to the
server from the internet, it kind of freezes up and says "Buffering" with no
actual movement but in a few moments it gives an error that there is
something wrong with the file. But if I connect via Windows Media Player 6.4,
it downloaded the Media 9 codec, connects to the media, and plays wonderfully.
To troubleshoot, I turned off different ports at a time in the firewall. I
learned that 6.4 will work with only MMS port 1755 allowed in. But,
apparently, WMP10 must have to have the RTSP ports because it won't even try
without them open.
One more thing, when I do have port 554 open to the server and I try to
connect with WMP 10, it not only does not work from the client, but it also
makes the server do all sorts of strange things (temporary freezeup, RDP
session hang, etc.) But, as far as I can tell, there is not another program
that conflicts with port 554.
Any suggestions?
