Windows media player problem in XP Pro

Hi,
can anyone tell me why, when I play a .wmv file using windows media player v 9.0.0.2980 in XP Pro, the video and sound are o.k. for probably half the length of the file and then the video cuts out but the sound continues for the second half.
I'd love a fix for this so thanks in anticipation.
