This is as good a place as any to ask about Windows Media Player 11. Something happened recently to my player and I can't see video in MP4 podcasts. I get an error saying that a codec is needed (MPEG-4 Video (AVC1)). I have another pc with the same version and it works fine. What could cause the codec to suddenly disappear and how can I add it back? I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the media player.

If you had it yesterday but not today sort of problem then System Restore might be an option to try.
Basically, the K-Lite Mega Codec Pack will play every video file on this planet.

Be careful, get that from a trusted download site, there are loads of virus ridden versions out there.

VLC works great for all video types and is less bloated than Windows Media Player. Never need to download a Codec either. Give it a try - Free and safe.

In this case something has gone haywire. If I can't find a way (quickly) to fix whatever went wrong, I'll just format C:. It's about time for that anyway.
I did try system restore back to 12/21 (oldest available). I don't like to add new apps as the fix because WMP worked just fine, and works fine on another PC. More apps = more muck. It's a bit like painting over wallpaper.

VLC has a very small footprint. It's not muck. WMP is muck.
I agree with above, VLC is good, but as you said it's a worked before.
As you have another pc working, Go to Control Panel > Sounds and Audio devices > Hardware > Audio Codecs
See if any have any issues with them or if you have different ones on the working pc.
