It is supported for XP SP1 and SP1a. Perhaps the error message you received was confusing:

This is the required system configuration to run WMP 10 - "Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition, Windows XP Professional, Windows XP Media Center Edition, or Windows XP Tablet PC Edition"
SP2 is listed under the "recommended" section only and therefore is not compulsory.
