Need Help....

I have uninstalled Windows ME and restored the previous windows 98se operating system. Windows ME was terribly slow and very bloated.

Now everything seems to be fine, however I can no longer play any music files. CD audio files will play fine however if I try and play anyform of a music data file there is no sound?

I can launch the file through either Windows Media Player or Real Jukebox and it looks like it is playing the song however there is no sound.

Please help, this was not a problem when running ME before the uninstall.

Thank you in advance for any help.

Well I have to say first open your volume control (or run sndvol32.exe) and ensure that you don't have the Wave sounds muted.

Also open Control Panel and open the Multimedia icon and specify your playback device.

Hello, deevaetodin.

Should check mskb article:

with the following resolution:

RESOLUTION

To resolve this behavior, remove and reinstall the CD Audio Device driver and check your DMA setting:

1.Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click Multimedia.

2.Click the Devices tab, double-click the Media Control Devices branch to expand it, click CD Audio Device (Media Control), and then click Properties.

3.Click Remove, click Yes when you are prompted to remove the device, click OK, click OK, and then restart your computer.

4.Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click Add New Hardware.

5.Click Next, click Next, click No, I want to select the hardware from a list, click Sound, video, and game controllers, and then click Next.

6.In the Manufacturers box, click Microsoft MCI, in the Models box, click CD Audio Device (Media Control), click Next, click Finish, and then click Yes.

7.Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click System.

8.Click the Device Manager tab, double-click the CDROM branch to expand it, and then click the CD-ROM drive.

Thank you.

However I no problem playing a CD audio file. I encounter problems when trying to run a plain audio file (MP3 etc).

When using Winamp I am presented with a message indicating that there is a problem with the MCI device.

Do I need to re-install my audio drivers agin. Through control panel in the multimedia section in the audio options I have no choices for playback it is all greyed out.

Help.

deevaetodin,

I would encourage you doing so. It falls within the chapter of 98 Plus! troublespots. Also multiple association of media player may be problematic and a reference is called to win.ini to determine the mci device media player is to use. The first part of the resolution above is made in this general direction. May also refer to another two articles for further elucidation:

But, factors multiply which can be beyond my rearch. Should proceed but with care. You can always fall back to your present config in case it doesn't improve the situation.

I would also encourage other helpers to contribute idea.

If you reinstall your sound drivers you should be able to select a preferred playback device. Also make sure the driver is for Win98.

If WinAmp continues to give problems after selecting a preferred playback device check to see if Media Player will play the audio files. If so it could be related to what tsuji has suggested or it could be a setting in WinAmp.

Thanks very much.

Will let you know.
