When booting up with Windows ME I keep getting a screen that says found new hardware and it trys to install drivers. I changed nothing to the computer and cannot cacel out of this message. The desk top comes up halfway and I do not get the start button. Is there a system restore to a previous state??

And yes there is a system restore. Start>Programs>Accessories>System Tools.

If you didn't change anything, perhaps a bad CMOS battery. I've seen it that the battery dies, then certain devices which were previously disabled in CMOS not become active by default.

Please always take the time to backup any and all data before performing any actions suggested for ANY problem, regardless of how minor a change it might seem. Also test the backup to make sure it is intact.

Hold the F8 button and come up in safe mode. Have you installed anything lately. Firstly this normally only comes up when you have had a new item of hardware installed or your system have the wrong drivers installed on the systems. Drivers are the software which makes the item of hardware talk to the other items of hardware and allows the software on your computer to work with the hardware as well.

To stop this message, you should firstly check if the hardware item which it is saying "New Hardware Found" is actually working properly, and has the correct drivers installed for it to work. If there is simply a mistake or you don’t want to use the item of hardware anymore, you can diable it with in you control panel.

1. Double click on My Computer.
2. Click on Control Panel.
3. Click on the System Icon.
4. You should see a tab which is named Hardware, click on it.
5. Then click on the Device Manager button (if you are running XP it will be the 3rd button in the middle of the System window under the hardware tab, if you have other windows it could be its own tab named Hardware.)
6. A list of items will then be displayed, you will see an item Unknown hardware of new, or it could have a "!" or something like it beside it, this is most likely the item which is causing the trouble. If you right click on the item listing, then Properties it will bring a new windows up for you.
7. Under the general tab at the bottom of the new window you will find the option/drop down box, "Device Usage" click on the drop down box and then click (disable), and then click on OK.

Your computer might want you to now reset, do so and see if this has stopped it.

Hope this helps....
