I used PWS for quite some time but got sick of it and all the security/virus holes that it had. So I use Apache now, which is what I recommend. It's free and works like a charm on Windows ME.
If you really want to use PWS on Windows ME, it is possible.
Installing the Personal Web Server in Windows Millenium Edition
The Setup program for the Personal Web Server is available on the Web.
Much discussion has gone on in newsgroups about Windows Me and PWS. I was surprised to see that apparently no one has gotten this to work! After some experimentation I was able to get it to install and run fine in Windows Me, you just have to install it a bit differently. Follow the steps and you should have no problems once it is completed
To install the Personal Web Server on MS Windows Me
This install was done off the PWS on the Windows 98 SE. In Windows Me go to Start then Run and browse to the add-ons then PWS on your Windws 98 SE cd. If you do not have the cd you can download the Windows NT Option Pack for Windows 95.
This install was done on with the 98SE cd but I believe it is the same once you have the full download from Microsoft.
[ol][li]If you have PWS installed and it is not working you need to completely uninstall it from your system.[/li][li]Run the setup program and do a custom install, select only the
Transaction Server option.[/li][li]Reboot and then do setup again then add/remove and install the other components (Personal Web Server, etc..). That is it! You should be good to go. This was done on a clean install of Windows Me (not an upgrade).
If you already have it installed and it is screwed up try removing everything (add/remove) but transaction server then rebooting then adding the rest.[/li][/ol] -
