This just started recently, but I have system restore disabled so that's an option.

Every time I try to install anything, I get that stupid Windows Logo Testing error, and it tells me that it will install. I don't even get the choice to "Continue Anyway," it just halts the installation.

I have tried installing Windows Updates, software for a keyboard with hot keys, games, etc. It doesn't matter.

Anyone ever hear of this?

From the Windows Update Troubleshooter:

Suggestion 1
==========
This problem can occur if the hotfix installer was referencing:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\CatRoot2\edb.log and the file was corrupt. Either renaming C:\WINDOWS\system32\CatRoot2\edb.log or renaming the entire
C:\WINDOWS\system32\CatRoot2 folder will allow the hotfix install to complete
normally

Suggestion 2
============
Register the following system files.

1. Click "Start," and then click "Run."
2. Type "regsvr32 licdll.dll" (without quotes).
3. Click "OK."
4. Type "regsvr32 regwizc.dll" (without quotes).
5. CLick "OK."

Suggestion 3
============
This problem can also occur if the Cryptographic Services have been disabled. To resolve this problem:
1. Click "Start," and then click "Run."
2. Type "Services.msc" (without quotes).
3. Double-click "Cryptographic Services." If the service has been disabled, enable it.
4. Attempt to download and install Windows Updates again, and then check to see if the
problem is resolved.

Suggestion 4
============
The symptom can occur if the "Microsoft Root Authority" certificate or the "NOLIABILITY ACCEPTED, (c)97 VeriSign, Inc." certificate under Trusted Root Certification Authorities has been removed. On another computer that has the Microsoft Root Authority certificate installed, do the following:
1. Open Internet Explorer
2. Click "Tools," and then click "Internet Options."
3. Click "Contents."
4. Click "Certificates."
5. Click "Trusted Root Certification Authorities."
6. Scroll down until you locate Microsoft Root Authority certificate.
7. Click "Export."
8. Follow the prompts to export the certificate to "DER encoded Binary
x.509(.CER)file." On the computer that cannot install the update, follow the steps to import the certificate you saved.

What options have you selected under Driver Signing in Control Panel/ System/ Hardware? Have you got it checked to block installation?

This specifies that device drivers without a digital signature cannot be installed. The installation process stops when attempting to install an unsigned device driver.

I have it set to ignore that stupid message and install it anyway, it doesn't make a difference. I can't install anything.

I tried all of the above except #4, I haven't done that yet.

Are you installing (and changing settings) as an Administrator?

I have completed all 4 of the above steps, still can't install anything.

Round Two then:

I. E. Tools >Internet Options > Advanced Tab > (scroll down thru the list) and under Security :
Clear (un-check) the check box next to "Check for server certificate revocation" . ( *OFF* )

Use SSL 2.0 (ON / selected)
Use SSL 3.0 (ON)

Internet Explorer > main menu /Tools/Internet Options >

Security Tab/ click on green icon Trusted Sites/click Sites button.
Click "Require server verification (https:) for all sites in this zone" to *clear* the selection.

In the "Add this Web site to the zone:" field, add these entries to list of "Trusted Sites" --

type
(and then click Add )

(click Add)

(yes with HTTPS)

*.akamai.net (yes, akamai.net -- )

Click OK.

Apply changes to I.E. & exit out of it. Retry Windows Update from the main Windows Start menus or through Help and Support.

If it still does not work:

i). The update log file would indicate if & why each failed ---should have error code + some text ---again, for each you need to find & "isolate" the section of the log for that "fail date".

Use Windows' Notepad to open this log:
C:\Windows\Windows Update.log (for Win XP & Win98/Me)

Having found the "error" , then do a "search" on this MS page. See MS Windows Update Troubleshooter

ii}. If still no joy, try https:\\v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com
in your browser address bar.

iii). if still no joy, see my earlier Tip "Windows Update No Install - Note" for HOSTS file entries. Reboot after making the HOSTS entries to test.

Well now I can't eve get to the Windows Update site. When I attempt to go there, I get the following

"Thank you for your interest in Windows Update

Windows Update is the online extension of Windows that helps you get the most out of your computer.

The latest version of Windows Update is available on computers that are running Microsoft Windows 98, Windows 98 Second Edition, Windows Millennium Edition, Windows 2000 (except Windows 2000 Datacenter Server), Windows XP, and the Windows Server 2003 family."

So I edited the Host file and entered:

"127.0.0.1 localhost
208.172.158.234 download.windowsupdate.com
208.172.158.234
That didn't work either, I can't even get to the page anymore. I tried removing it from the trusted sites under security, same problem.

I don't know if this is of any importance or not, but I cannot rename the catroot2 folder or the file edb.log

When I try to rename the catroot2 folder, it tells me that access is denied, and to make sure another program is not using it. I get the same thing for the file edb.log.

Also, when I try to open edb.log I get "Cannot open C:\...catroot2\edb.log log file. Make sure there is a disk in the drive."

I will check the log file shortly, but the Windows Update site tells me they installed successfully, but I know they didn't.

Check the Properties Security Tabs and make sure the Permissions for your Username are correct.

Have you looked in the Event Viewer to see what errors are mentioned in there.

Some general things to try.

Try Safe Mode (With Networking Option).

Try running ChkDsk to check your drive for errors. Right click your Drive icon/ Properties/ Tools/ Error Checking.

Run the System File Checker program from the Run Box by typing.....Sfc /Scannow in it and have your XP CD handy.

HOW TO: Verify Unsigned Device Drivers in Windows XP

If they don't work you could try repairing windows itself by running it over itself. You will lose all your windows updates but your files will be untouched.

How to Perform an In-Place Upgrade (Reinstallation) of Windows XP (Q315341)

Also, this may just be an artifact of your copy and paste, but make sure you HOSTS entries to do not have a quotation mark and semicolon, and make sure notepad did not add a .txt extension to the file. There should be no extension to HOSTS.
