Windows Firewall Turned Off

When I turn on my computer windows informs me that my firewall has been turned off. When I try to enable the firwewall via the Windows Security Center, a windows tells me that the Security Center cannot turn on the Windows firewall and that I should try to due it manually from Control Menu. When I click on the icon, Windows gives me a message saying that the "settings cannot be displayed because the associated service is not running." It gives me the option of starting the firewall/connection service (ICS), however when I click to start it, a message states that Windows cannot start the ICS. Does anyone know what's going on? Thanks.

Some viruses and malware will disable a fire wall. Be sure to update and run those programs to see if that is an issue, in safe mode if possible, to see if there is something keeping it off.

I did all the steps recommended, and when I try the very last step by typing NET START Shared Access at the command prompt, it again replies that the ICS could not be started, and System error 10047 has occured. An address incompatible with the requested protocol was used.

Any suggestions?

Take your Event Viewer errors to this site and search for them.

For what it is worth, I have seen that same error message in Longhorn Beta, and it was because half the operating system was missing. So drawing on that maybe a repair install is the quickest way to go?

Run the System File Checker program from the Run Box by typing.....Sfc /Scannow in it and have your XP CD handy.

Another useless suggestion is that you look at a third party firewall, even the free ones are on par with XP's.
