When I type a folder address in the Windows Explorer address bar the folder pane and viewing pane change to reflect the address. A good thing.....

When I highlight a folder in the folder window the address bar doesn't change to reflect the folder that is highlighted(unless I hit 'Enter' or an 'arrow' key). neither does the viewing pane.

Shouldn't have to hit extra keys to move around and the folder view has historically been an effective way to navigate.

Is there a patch for this?

That's the way it's supposed to work - the address bar and the folder tree show where you currently are, but if you select a folder in the main area you haven't moved into it, just selected it.

If you're viewing the contents of 'C:\Users\Public' and highlight 'Public Downloads' you'll still be in the 'C:\Users\Public' folder.

I don't understand. Surely, if you highlight a folder, you can see it so should know where it is.

When you select a folder within Explorer, it does know where it is, but it won't take the resources to tell you the entire address in one string unless you do one of the following:
1. Right-click, properties...
2. In the address bar, you can add a slash to the end of the current address, and arrow down until you find the folder/file you're looking for, then just click out of the drop down box, and select the new address - if you're wanting to create a link or something.

At least that's if I remember correctly. I'm not at a Win7 machine right now, and don't have immediate access to one at work, so I can't say for absolute certainty.

I understand what you are saying. What i'm saying is that it is a design flaw. I'd like to know if someone has found a work around. It isn't effective the way I use windows and I'm pretty adept.

You could try a third party app. For instance, FreeCommander works pretty well. I use it on occasion, though I've not paid very close attention to this particular detail to see whether it's any better.

If you look at Folder Options/ General, there are two options you could try.

The Single Click to select a Folder, with (point to Select), or the "automatically expand to current folder" mentioned in the Navigation Pane section. With the last option you would have to use the Navigation Pane to make your selections change the location in the Address Bar.

Probably not quite what you wanted but it is the closest that Windows 7 may be able to do?

Here’s a list of alternatives to Explorer, most mention XP, some mention Vista, so it is a pretty old list.
