I managed to find the XP equivalent of Explorer ( and I also lament the passing of File Manager). I prefer to view my files as a list with details, not as icons.

Is there any way of changing the default so that the list comes up automatically instead of me having to go into View/Details every time?

Thanks.

pamelas,

Set the view the way you want it then go into Tools > Folder Options > View and click the button to "Apply to all folders".

Hope that helps.

I'll give that a go, Old Man.

Thanks for your help.

Me again, it worked, thank you! Now can someone explain why Windows Explorer (AKA file manager) is a bloody accessory?

Accessory??!!!

Cheers all.

Pamelas,

I don't claim to have any insight into Bill Gates's mind! I live in the Explorer so I don't understand either how it can be considered an accessory. I think they are pushing the whole desktop metaphor and made the Explorer an accessory if you REALLY feel the need to have that interface. I just believe the Explorer is a cleaner, more concise way of seeing all the information. Go figure!

I just create a shortcut to the Explorer and put it in my Startup folder so everytime I restart the computer, the Explorer is automatically brought up.

I created a shortcut and put it on my desktop.

I think creating soft, fluffy and rounded desktop icons and hiding Explorer away is just Bill's way of looking after us by making sure we don't hurt ourselves on any sharp edges. Or delete files that we really shouldn't have but did because we don't know what we're doing.

P. Coming soon, a question on how to get my bloody scanner to work with XP.
