Im having problems with my windows explorer. Whenever i click on a windown explorer folder, it takes about ten minutes to open. The search button on the start menu doesn't work anymore, it just freezes my system up. I've reformatted my computer twice already, by sticking the windows xp restore disk in the drive and restarting the computer, following the instructions along the way. I really don't want to have to reformat my computer again, so can anyone help me. I am also having a problem with the taskbar, it doesn't show the volume icon anymore. I have all the correct options selected, i have it on always show in the taskbar options, i have it set in the audio controls. Can anyone please help me?

Some general things to try.

See if System Restore will get you back to a restore point before your problem with Explorer.

Try Safe Mode (Do you have this problem in Safe Mode?).

Try running ChkDsk to check your drive for errors. Right click your Drive icon/ Properties/ Tools/ Error Checking.

Run the System File Checker program from the Run Box by typing.....Sfc /Scannow in it and have your XP CD handy.

Yap, sounds like a spyware problem.

Download and run Microsoft AntiSpyware a few times and make sure that you restart your computer after each run. Make sure that you have the latest Windows patch and anti virus definition file.

You should also regularly perform disk cleanup and defrag on your drive.
