Windows Explorer problem

This problem began yesterday -- I have a Dell desktop machine with Windows XP (Home edit.).

When I right-click on a file or folder, I no longer get the menu of options I may follow -- copy, delete, erase, send to, properties, etc. Instead, I get the 'hourglass' and, essentially, my screen freezes. I CAN still click on START and bring up the START menu, but can't go anywhere from there -- that freezes then, too.

I need to reboot by shutting off the computer.

The right mouse button still does work in other contexts -- as in my email client, and when right-clicking on an icon in the system tray.

Does anyone have any suggestions or fixes? Is there a way of diagnosing and fixing this problem, SHORT of a complete reinstall of Windows (which I would dread).

Best regards,

Have your instalation disc to hand.

Go to Start > Run and enter
sfc /scannow
hit Return

This will run System File Checker, repair any / all your damaged system files and should fix the problem
