W98SE. I open windows explorer. I select (any), say the F: drive and right click to get the menu up, where I choose either Properties or Sharing (all other options are unaffected). ..

Then I get a message saying that explorer has encountered a problem and is closing. Happens consistently, been doing it for months.

Message reads...
EXPLORER caused an invalid page fault in
module <unknown> at 0000:02400b00.

Only seems to happen on drive letters, not on any sub directories!

Any thoughts?

Thanks for looking.

Going to give a few suggestions. First off go to start, run, and type sfc and hit enter. Put your system disc in and close anything it loads. Start it and if it replaces any files restart the computer.

Next step, go to start, programs accessories, system tools then scandisk. Run it and when it finishes run defrag afterwards then restart.

Let us know if this helps.

Thanks electronicsfreak,

Had never heard of sfc before, but i ran it antway. Found 1 possible corruption setupx.dll. When I tried to restore from the original CD, sfc seemed to be assuming Windows Me not 9X, so i haven't replaced it. The file dates still look ok, so I doubt that that's the problem.

Have run scandisk loads of times and I defrag regularly (around 3 times a week).

Any further checks or ideas, gratefully received!?

I have long held a suspicion that DiskkeeperLite has something to do with the problem, and it seems more than co-incidental that I can select properties of sub directories and not drive letters - drives being what Diskkeeper operates on?

Not really sure what else to try. If you think diskeeper might be causing it, remove it and see if it still does it. Let us know of what you find.
