i have this xp computer, everything works fine including network.

BUT, Sophos antivirus won't update through internal server (UNC path) and gives me Windows error 1222. I also tried another antivirus McAfee, still won't update. Looks like the system account won't establish connection to network????
what's going on??

thanks.

"cannot access network" is the problem, but it doesn't happen to logged on user. I can net use, browser, UNC path, everything. It just happens to certain services like Antivirus. The fixes are there in the system already.

Is there any firewalling that is blocking access to these applications?

Have they ever been able to access the Internet?

Any other errors or warnings forthcoming from the Event Viewers?

internet access and network access are fine. firewall is off, any interactive tasks are fine.

I can logon as userX and go \\server\share install the sophos antivirus, but when sophos tries to update pattern files from \\server\share using the same credential, it gives the 1222 error

the only error I can see is:

computer browser service stops automatically after I turned it on. I think it has something to do with the network problem but not the cause of it.

Does deleting and then creating the \\server\share access make any difference?

Have you tried the Winsock Fix from this FAQ?
WinXP Connectivity Issues
faq779-4625

Make sure the Security Center and the Windows Firewall Services are Started and set to Automatic as the Computer Browser Service requires them running.

thanks, but no. so I gave up, I installed the standalone version and ask it to synch with the internet server (http), it works great
