windows 98 wont load it just freezes midway, same thing happens when i try booting in safe mode

dos seemed to be working so but now it locks up b4 i get to the command prompt

any ideas on what i can do?
i cant reformat due to important files on the hd, i just need to move the files from \desktop to elsewhere on the hd and then reinstall windows

Boot to DOS, and type: scanreg /fix
See if that helps.
If not, reboot to DOS, and type: scanreg
Select to view backups, then choose a date before this started happening.
If that fails, get a startup disk with CD-ROM drivers, rename win.com to win.bak save your desktop stuff, and install windows over top.
Cheers,
Jim
