On booting PC in Win 98 the display set to 25 colours, the control panel/display/setting allowed true coulor and 256 colour settings but when machine restarted the settings failed to be applied and the following message appears

'there is a problem with your display settings. The adaptor type is incorrect, or the current settings do not work with your hardware'.

There have been no hardware/software changes and this problem occured on booting after normal operation. The graphic chip is on board, could this have failed? Any help would be much appriciated.

Well, the first thing you want to do is make sure the display adapter driver is correct and not corrupted. The problem you described normally points to this video driver, even though you claim that a software change did not occur.

If uninstalling the old driver and reinstalling the correct one doesn't help, then I guess there's the possibility that the graphics chip itself is going bad. However, it isn't likely that it would work only at lower resolutions. You would think that it would fail altogether.

Thanks Cdogg, reinstalled driver and all is well, still no idea why the original driver should corrupt on boot but somehow it did, thanks again for the help.
