Windows cab files folder 3

Someone told me there is a way to avoid having to put in the Windows 98 installation CD every time a new application or device is installed: something about extracting cab files to a folder. Can anyone enlighten me? Thanks.

Yeah. On a hard drive that is capable of being seen from a boot disk you create a folder 98in and a sub under it win98.
copy the stuff from the CD root to 98in and the stuff in CD\win98 to 98in\win98. Next time you are asked for the cd you point to the 98in\win98 on whatever drive you have it.
Separating the stuff like I do is actually more than is required, but I like to have the hard drive duplicate the CD layout.

Good advice ED.
Here is a little more.
Go into the win98 cd to Tools\Reskit\Netadmin\Poledit and copy those files to a folder you make on your c: drive.
run the poledit.exe
I'm sorry I have XP now so this is from memory.
In the Network section is part called Update.
When you highlight it, it shows a path below. You can change that to the new folder path you copied your cab files too.
Windows will look there first for the files before asking you to find them for it. If you set this correctly you will never be asked for the CD again.

I have tried to run poledit.exe, but I get the following message:

System Policy Editor

Unable to open template file C:\WINDOWS\INF\COMMON.ADM:
The system cannot find the file specified

It seems from your posting, that you've created a sub-folder(sub-directory) under the C:\WINDOWS\INF directory called Common.adm...this File should be in the INF directory

To use poledit.exe (System Policy Editor) correctly.......you need to make sure that these three files are in the C:\WINDOWS\INF folder (not a subfolder beneath it)....
1. Poledit.inf
2. Windows.adm
3. Common.adm

If after that, you are still having trouble.....try installing Group Policies(Grouppol.dll),(you'll probably need this if you have User Profiles enabled) which you may be prompted for from the Win98 CD....to do this....
Go to Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs>Windows Setup Tab>System Tools and select the checkbox for "Group Policies"....click OK and then OK again..
The Grouppol.dll file should be in your C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM Directory,..and Grouppol.inf in the C:\WINDOWS\INF directory

This next excerpt is taken right from the poledit.txt file on Win98 CD-ROM :
To install this tool on your local hard disk,
or to install support for group policies,
use the Add/Remove Programs option in Control Panel, select the Windows Setup tab, click the Have Disk button, and install from the TOOLS\RESKIT\NETADMIN\POLEDIT directory located on the install media.

Also find these files Poledit.hlp and Win98rk.hlp on the Win98 CD in D:\tools\reskit\help....where < D: > is your CD drive..
