Windows Activation prompts lock up PC

I just installed an upgrade version of Windows XP onto a laptop PC. (The drive was empty to start) Everything installed fine except for the activation part. Everytime the prompts come up, it locks up the PC to the point that you have to power off the machine to recover.

Any ideas?

I have an working internet connection and everything has a valid license.

You try doing the manual activation over the phone to Microsoft.

If the machine is playing up too badly to continue using it, check the troubleshooting lists in these articles.
