I have downloaded files, put them on my desk top, in my documents...everywhere and nothing will open them. It keeps saying Winword needed to open these files...Help??? It is driving me crazy...So I was going to re-run Windows 98 but purchased this computer second hand and have no Windows 98 disk... Then I went to Microsoft to do a Windows update...came up with an error # 0x800a138F.. If anyone can suggest anything, I'd appreciate it.. Thanx

Open the files with wordpad.exe
(click start run - wordpad.exe )

WordPad should open the files with a .doc/.dot extension....
Winword is MS "Word" Processor...as in Word97, Word2000 etc.
First go;
Start>Settings>Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs>Windows Setup>click on Accessories..click Details..scroll down to WordPad and check the box to select...and Apply/OK...
Now the program should be installed........and on your programs menu under Accessories(in case you want a Desktop shortcut)...
Also go to;
Start>Settings>Folder Options>View tab..and
check "Show All Files"....and
"Show file Attrib in detail view"
"Show Popup description...." and
uncheck "Hide file ext. for known file types"....

just to make life easier in future......

Now when you click "Details" in windows Explorer...you'll see the .doc file extension....
If you still have probs..come back and we'll deal with file associations....
Please give as much info as possible.

The previous owner probably had Winword installed to open those files, and uninstalled it before selling the computer to you.
Now the system looks for Winword to open the files, and cannot find it.

An easy way to resolve that is to go to Folder Options/File Types, click on the file type in the list that will not open, click Remove, close 'Folder Options', click on the file to open it, select Wordpad from the list in the 'Open With' utility, check the box for 'Always use this program to open this file', and click OK.
